What if the news was silly? That’s Whack! aims to open up opportunities for Kiwi kids to have a safe, fun, and engaging way to interact with the news. It intends to aid both teachers and students in primary school as an educational and informative resource, providing multiple ways to learn about the news.
Inspired by interactive sites like the SpinOff(News) and IXL Learning(Educational), That’s Whack! incorporates saturated colours and playful imagery to catch the attention of students. By also offering a constantly moving interface and fully interactive hover elements, the site engages kids who are easily disinterested, especially those who are used to the fast paced format of popular sites like TikTok and Reels.
What if news was exciting but safe for our kids?To foster a welcoming space for young curious minds, repeating patterns and strong colour palette effectively guide the user through the site, encouraging higher engagement in other articles. Quizzes at the end of each article encourage kids to interact with the article on a deeper level.
I’ve found that by maintaining a clear visual system, the website builds a cohesive, inviting character.
